Class Descriptions
Orchestration and Instrumentation: Orchestration is the art of arranging a musical composition for performance by an orchestra or the orchestral treatment of a musical composition. In order to do this effectively, one needs to understand the characteristics of the various orchestral instruments, both individually and in combination. What makes Copland so easy to recognize? Stravinsky? Ravel? Rimsky Korsakov? Beethoven? In large part it is the way each of these composers uniquely “heard” the orchestra. This class is taught by Jonathan Moser, String Techniques and Chamber Music Professor at Mercyhurst University.
Conducting and Musical Analysis: Under the direction of Thomas Hong, Music Director, University of Pennsylvania Orchestras, learn what it takes to have the entire orchestra at the tips of your fingers. Study the popular conducting patterns and styles of some of the most outstanding conductors in history, and experiment and practice to find what works best for you. This class is combined with a Survey of Musical Analysis.
History of Sacred Music: Time travel through the history as you explore how religious music evolved from “the beginning” to today. Study music across cultural backgrounds and learn what music has meant to religions around the world and throughout history.
Music Theory: This class will dive deep into the nuances of music. Understand the mathematics of musical notation, the principles and processes behind musical construction, the historical development of music , and more. Discover what music “is” beyond the sound.
Ear Training: Learn to identify notes by pitch, interval, and more as you train your ears to become more knowledgeable about music theory. By tuning your ear into the world of music, you can make the most of your private practice time. Hear the difference that this class can make on your performance. This class is taught by Professor Jonathan Moser.
PIMF Solo Performance Lecture Series: Lecture Series including the following topics: Battling Performance Nerves, College Audition Preparation, Establishing Social Media Presence Specific to your Musical Pursuits, Public Speaking, and others. This lecture series features members of The Philadelphia Orchestra as well as other special guests.

What technology do I need in order to participate in the festival?
All you need to participate is a computer or laptop with internet connection and video/audio recording capabilities, a quiet room, your instrument, and your brain! In order to make our online programs as accessible as possible, we do not require any subscription to video software, specialized microphones, or external webcams.
What software will be used by students to participate in the festival?
All of our online programs will be taught live through Zoom and/or Skype. However, you do not need a paid Zoom or Skype subscription to participate. A free account is all you will need. We will take care of the rest!
